I’m excited to share a room reveal with you today. My two sons have been asking for a room refresh for the past year. Their room in our previous home was a toddler room, so I created a space that is boyish but still stylish and will grow with them into the teen years. Like the rest our of home, this room is neutral with pops of color and for the first time, we used wallpaper on an accent wall! Keep reading for my boys bedroom ideas, I hope you love it as much as I do!
A very special thanks to our partners for these neutral boys bedroom ideas: Nadeau Little Rock | Wallpaperie | Lauren Haskell Designs | Lauren Anderson Art | Sherwin-Williams. This post contains affiliate links, click here to see our full disclosure.
Let’s start with a before photo of their room at our previous home. They had a space-themed room with beige walls and navy bedding. It was very cute for a little boy room, but definitely a darker room.
Here’s a photo of the room when we moved into our new home. The bright, turquoise walls are fun for a girls room but I was excited about updating this room to fit my boys’ desires.
A little background on this room design. My boys specifically asked for an “army room.” I initially imagined army green so I asked them to think of something else, ha! I came across a set of khaki colored camo sheets and this room design idea was born! I used some rustic elements, some classic elements, a few modern touches, and threw in some boyish decor to pull together a chic boys room that could work for a nursery, a toddler room and definitely an older boy room! (Throw in some blush pillows and flowers and I might take over this room)!
Drum roll, please….
BOYS BEDROOM IDEAS: FURNITURE
Let’s dive into these boys bedroom ideas. First of all, their twin beds are the beds their dad and his brother had as a child. I jumped at the chance to use them for our boys. I love it when I can include sentimental furniture and decor in our home. They are well-loved, which I think gives them a little more character! When I decided to go with a neutral theme for this room, I was apprehensive about the dark cherry stain in a room where I want more light and an airy feel. However, I went to see what was available at my local Nadeau Little Rock and found the perfect pieces that helped me create a cohesive look for this room and include the beds that are so special to us.
The nightstand, which is made out of mango wood, works so perfectly between their beds. I love the warm colored stain and the dark hardware ties in the dark stain of the beds. I love that Nadeau has timeless pieces but at affordable prices. The boys store their vintage books in the nook below and all their treasures in the drawer. Do you know how many treasures seven to nine year-old boys have?
I found these two upholstered benches that not only match the wood stain, but they are so functional! We needed a space to lay out the boy’s clothes every night, and these benches act as a reading nook or a stepping stool into bed. I went back and forth on whether or not they would just be in the way, and they not only add a fun element to the design of the room, they get used daily and fit perfectly in the space!
We are using this cabinet as a dresser, but it could serve as a buffet as well. It has the perfect amount of storage for all their folded clothes and it is a thinner size which is what we needed to fit in this space. The staff at Nadeau Little Rock was so helpful in my search for the right pieces. They helped me measure half the store, ha! They answered all my questions about future shipments and even helped me load the car. I’m so impressed by their price point, customer service and the quality of their pieces. Their slogan is “furniture with a soul” and it fits them perfectly because their items are unique but timeless and there’s such a wide selection from decorative pieces to furniture to wall decor. They have over 40 stores nation-wide so be sure to check out their locations.
BOYS BEDROOM IDEAS: ACCENT WALL
I love the wallpaper trend and I’ve been interested in trying it out but apprehensive about the application part. I’ve never used wallpaper in my decorating and wasn’t sure about the permanency. When I learned that peel and stick was an option, I started scrolling through all the patterns found at Wallpaperie. I knew I wanted a neutral pattern and I was elated when I found this small buffalo check pattern. Who doesn’t love buffalo check? It comes in other colors too! The accent wall provides a classic feel to the room, and the beige color screams boy to me.
I was initially nervous about installing it, but Amy from Wallpaperie sent me a video tutorial along with detailed instruction. I’m proud to say that my husband and I hung the wallpaper ourselves in about an hour. It could most definitely be done faster but the corners of our room were a little off so it took a little more finessing to get the pattern to line up. The actual process of hanging each piece was really so simple and the results? You don’t even notice the seams! It’s a very thick, high quality wallpaper and I’m in love with the end result! You have to check out all the styles that Wallpaperie offers. If they don’t have what you are looking for, she can create a custom design! I’m in love with their pink floral designs and may have to use one in a future girls room design!
BOYS BEDROOM IDEAS: ART AND DECOR
Just as I was wrapping up the details of this room, a local artist, Lauren Anderson Art, reached out to discuss working together. I love collaborating with other creatives and as we talked about my current and future room design projects, we thought the boys’ room would be such a fun project to work on together. I’ve seen Lauren’s work before. She is very generous and often donates her work for the benefit of local charity events. She created a beautiful landscape to go above the dresser. It has beautiful warm tones, and the special part of this piece for me is that it reminds me of an illustration out of the book Guess How Much I Love You, which is my favorite book to read to the kids.
The boys are very much into world maps right now so I asked Lauren if she could create one. She created this gorgeous world map with watercolors, by hand! She is so talented, and her artwork has definitely elevated the design of their room! She’s shown she can create anything (and she ships!), so be sure to contact her or find her on Instagram to discuss your own custom pieces. She can help you no matter where you are located!
One of my favorite accessories in their room is the vintage globe. As you know, I love to use items from the past that tell a story, especially if they are from our past. This globe was Brian’s grandfather’s and the boys loved him. It’s special to have a piece of his life in their room. I’ve used some vintage books from my childhood and vintage books from their other great-grandfather as well.
We took a trip to Home Depot and the boys picked out some succulent plants. We potted them and they plan to take care of them. They work great as decor for the room, and for a fun learning experience as well.I found these fun toys (tictactoe and wooden brain teaser games) that they can play with but are such a fun, rustic addition to the room decor. We have already had to utilize youtube to learn how to put these cube games back together, ha! I also found a compass that they are obsessed with now. I love it when I can use functional decor that they can have fun with and learn from as well.I was looking for a mirror that would not only blend with the room but act as an interesting focal point as well. I thought this mirror coordinated so perfectly with the wallpaper, the color of the bedding and pillows, and brought a chic feel to the room. I found a few other options for you at different price points and they go on sale often, so check here, here, and here).
BOYS BEDROOM IDEAS: BEDDING
I found these frame pillows from the LO Home shop of my friend Lauren Haskell Designs. Lauren was so kind to advise me on the bedding and pillow arrangement for the room. I wasn’t happy with my initial plan and knew it was missing something. She had just what I needed in the perfect colors, and was so wonderful to work with!
We went with the color dune, and the small pillow is size 14×20, the large is size is 26×26, and the pillow inserts are listed as the same size as well. I love that Lauren carries so many color options, both white with the colored ribbon trim, and solid color with a white trim, which leads to so many color options! She has both the pillow cover and the inserts and has velvet pillows, tasseled pillows, and several other options. She also carries accessories like fun hardware and gingers jars (that I shared in my living room reveal), lamps, throws, rugs, and a full selection of furniture and art.
As I mentioned before, this project started with finding these camo sheets, they are a jersey fabric and my boys love them. The quilted bedding is currently sold out, however, I found some great neutral alternatives at various price points (check here, here, and here). I love the bedskirt because it has a tailored look and it’s an 18-inch drop, which is hard to find. The longer drop length hides the box springs and bed frame!
BOYS BEDROOM IDEAS: PAINT
If you have been following my blog or Instagram for long, you know I love and use Sherwin-Williams paint in our home, and have for years. We’ve transformed this home from darker beige colors (and some blue) to white, light and airy. I have to say that I’m in love with the result. I always get questions about my paint colors, so wanted to include all the details here. Like some of the other rooms in our home, we used Dover White Emerald Paint in this room because it coordinated so well with the fabulous buffalo checked wallpaper. Dover White is a creamier white. It’s not too yellow and not too dark, it’s not too bright, and it really looks so great with our Pure White Trim which is also the Emerald Paint line.
We use the Sherwin-Williams Emerald Paint line because it is paint and primer in one. It covers more so you don’t need as many coats, which saves both time and money and I’m always looking for ways to save time and money! I love that it is formulated to block dark colors, which was really useful in this room that had bright turquoise walls. It is also designed to prevent staining, water spots, and streaking, a must for this room of two busy boys! People often ask how we keep a white house clean with five kids living here, well this line of paint certainly helps!
BOYS BEDROOM IDEAS: LIGHTING
I wanted an industrial look and thought this semi-flush light was still chic looking and coordinated with the army theme the boys were wanting. They have been reading at night in their beds so I wanted a bedside light, and I found these brass task lamps that turn off and on by touch. I love how they look on the nightstands and frame the mirror.
I went through about four different lamp options before I settled on this one for the dresser. I love how the gold compliments the landscape painting frame, and ties in the gold from the task lamps across the room. I also love this one as well if you are looking for a little more casual options.
A long post, but you know I love to cover all the details for you and include all the sources! I hope you love these boys room ideas, if you haven’t yet, take a look at the other rooms in our home that we’ve finished: Kitchen, Living Room, Master Bedroom, Toddler Bedroom, and Playroom.
Here is a pin for you, I hope you will save this for later. Thanks so much for taking the time to read along with me today!
